 Metroland has announced the return of four printed weekly community newspapers. The Burlington Post, Oakville Beaver, Oshawa This Week and Whitby this week. The print version of these newspapers were cancelled when Metroland filed for creditor protection two years ago. Recently there appears to be a resurgence of community newspapers start ups. Freshet in Vancouver, Haida Gwaii News B.C., Norfolk News southern Ontario. Grant Haven Media is seven chain of local newspapers that has been expanding in South and  Central Ontario.

Most of the start ups are independents who previously worked for newspaper chains. Metroland stopped printing 70 community newspapers and in 2023 closed all their newspaper printing plants. Over 600 staff lost their jobs at the time. There have been hundreds of community newspapers that have shut down in Canada in the last 10 years. Over two thirds of the newspapers in Canada that have closed have been community newspapers.
