UPM Kaukas To Stop Paper Production
LAPPEENRANTA, FINLAND,—
UPM will reduce annual coated mechanical paper capacity by 300,000 tonnes. Paper machine 1 at Kaukas will cease production during Q4 and be permanently closed. Coated mechanical paper production in Finland will now be focused at UPM’s Rauma mill. Plans to cease paper making at the Kaukas mill in Finland were announced over the summer.

UPM Communication Papers last year closed its Hürth newsprint mill near Cologne and decommissioned a paper machine at the Nordland Papier fine paper facility.

UPM Communication Papers employs around 5,000 at its 10 paper mills and has annual production capacity of 4.3m tonnes. UPM Group employs 15,800 worldwide. Announcements about paper mill shutdowns has become a regular occurrence with Stora Enso, Canford, Island Papers , Arjowiggins, UPM, Westrock, International Paper and Domtar have announced mill or machine shut downs in the several years.
