Canada Post Workers Go on Strike Again
OTTAWA—
Canada Post has been trying to increase direct mail. Postal strikes do not help.
Canada Post has been trying to increase direct mail. Postal strikes do not help.
Postal Workers have gone on a nationwide strike in response to proposed operational changes by the federal government, marking a repeat of last year’s strike. Canada Post is projected to lose $1.5 billion by the end of the year, currently losing $10 million daily. Government-proposed changes  include shifting to ground delivery for non-priority mail, consolidating mailboxes and closing rural post offices. Union argues these changes lack clarity and could lead to significant job losses and reduced service.
Postal strikes in the past have had a significant impact on the printing industry with 60% to 70% of what is printed goes through the mail.

Canada Post is delivering just 2 billion letters each year, down from 5.5 billion in 2005, even as the number of homes has grown. Parcel volumes have also plunged, as Canada Post deals with high fixed costs. The Government says Canada Post is effectively insolvent, and repeated bailouts are not a long-term solution. Transformation is required to ensure the survival of Canada Post and protect the services Canadians.

This is what is wrong with a large union. They purposely disrupt essential services at a key moment of impact, because the majority of their members feel they can have more. Every public assessment of CPC's financials clearly shows there is no more to be had, because the world has changed! Hey union, you signed up to be an "employee", if you don't like your employer's decisions, then leave, just like all of us private sector workers do! And good luck trying to find the same compensation and perks you have now.
