Windsor Newspaper Plant Closing
WINDSOR, ONTARIO—
Postmedia who own the Windsor Star is closing the printing plant in Windsor and moving the work to its Islington and London plant as of March 3, and sell the building. Lay offs include 22 full-time and 55 part-time employees. In their latest rounds of cuts they plan to lay off 11 per cent of their editorial staff, moving twelve of its Alberta community newspapers to digital-only formats and looking at more outsourcing for printing.
Last September they ended Monday print edition of nine urban daily newspapers. The Vancouver Sun, The Province, Calgary Herald, Calgary Sun, Edmonton Journal, Edmonton Sun, Ottawa Citizen, Ottawa Sun and Montreal Gazette were all impacted. Postmedia is Canada's largest newspaper publisher with daily and weekly papers across the county. Postmedia has been losing money on its printed newspapers for years and has been trying to expand its income from online advertising but total revenue keeps dropping. Psotmedia is heavily in debt and questions have been raised on how long they can survive.
