Book Sales Up , Printing Capacity Down
CHICAGO—
Quad and LSC Communications the United States two largest book printers, have been struggling, made worse during Covid-19. LSC, North America's largest book printer declared bankruptcy earlier this year and it's assets are up for sale. Quad’s book printing business is also up for sale, the company had to temporarily shut down three book printing plants due to Covid-19. Print book sales were up more than 12 percent in the last 3 months .
According to the New York Times the surge has been driven by several new blockbuster titles, including books by Suzanne Collins, Stephenie Meyer, John Bolton and Mary Trump. Publishers have also seen an unexpected demand for older titles, particularly books about racism, children’s educational workbooks and fiction. Publishers have been struggling with a shortage of book printing capacity for several years now. Book retailers are worried that as publishers release titles that were postponed because of Covid-19 and new titles this fall, many titles will run out of stock or even not be printed hurting Christmas sales. The largest Canadian book printers Friesens, Transcontinental and Marquis all appear to be doing well and have had growing export sales.
