Unions around the world endorse Quebecor World independence
OTTAWA—UNI Global Union, an organization that represents 900 trade unions and 20 million workers worldwide, is unanimously against RR Donnelley’s bid to purchase Quebecor World.
According to a statement on UNI’s website, it believes Donnelley’s purchase of the struggling printer would create an anti-competitive industry, devoid of free markets, fair pricing, and better working conditions for employees.
“A stand alone, reorganized Quebecor World represents the best alternative for maintaining a competitive marketplace in the commercial printing industry, particularly in North America where RR Donnelley and Quebecor World combined represent about 50% of the market in a number of key product categories.”
UNI also says the combination of the two companies would create a global conglomerate with estimated annual revenues of US$18 billion, about eight times the size of the next largest competitor.
Duncan Brown, national director of the Graphical Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada (CEP) told PrintCan his organization completely agrees with UNI, and that the deal Quebecor World will offer its creditors looks better than the one RR Donnelley presented.
Quebecor World has a creditor’s meeting scheduled for June 18 in Montreal to vote on the proposed restructuring.
