Canada Post Strike Nears Three-weeks
OTTAWA—
Canada Post and the Postal Workers (CUPW) have not yet resumed discussions after mediated negotiations were suspended by the special federal mediator last week.On Sunday, Canada Post presented the union with a “framework” to resume negotiations which it said it hoped would “reignite discussions.”The framework includes proposals to bring greater flexibility to the Corporation’s delivery model, while also demonstrating movement on other key issues.
It was Canada Post's hope that these proposals will reignite discussions and, together with the support of mediators, help the parties work toward final agreements. To facilitate talks, Canada Post will not be providing further details outside the negotiations process at this time. Any were from 60% to 70% of what is printed goes through the mail. The last postal strike was a major hit for the Canadian printing industry. A larger percent of Canada Post volume is direct mail with a continual shrinking volume of letter mail.
