Catalyst Paper Crofton Mill Closing
CROFTON, B.C.—
Paper Excellence Canada announced the closure of the paper production facility at its Catalyst mill in Crofton, B.C., on Thursday, saying operating costs were too high due to inflationary pressures on raw materials, energy costs and a lack of domestic fibre supply. 75 employees will be let go as a result of the move. The company had previously announced that the curtailment would last until February 2024,
with similar shutdowns affecting the mill since October 2022. The B.C. and federal governments gave Paper Excellence $18.8 million in 2023 to retool one of the paper lines to a new type of product, with a promise from the company that the funding could help save 100 jobs. Announcements about paper mill shutdowns has become a monthly occurrence with Stora Enso, Canford, Island Papers , Arjowiggins, UPM, Westrock, International Paper and Domtar have announced mill or machine shut downs in the last year.

Hope they are paying back all the tax dollars they received.
Horrible way to treat your employees and customers.

So cost are high due to inflationary pressures, and yet since the covid shutdown there was huge demand for paper and printers know how much prices went up. Some have gone up a 100% and there were times when you had to wait weeks or months to get it. One would think those would be good conditions for a paper mill.
Paper Excellence has bought up and shut down at least 3 mills in BC. This last one they managed to get our tax money as well. Oh and look for the CBC news story last year when they announced who owns Paper Excellence and sells their paper in Canada.
Why are we allowing foreign companies to buy up and shut down our industry.
