Island Paper Mill Reopening
CROFTON, B.C.—
More than 100 workers will recalled to Island Paper's Mill on Vancouver Island after $50 million in upgrades were announced . Paper Excellence Canada closed the mill in Crofton, B.C., last December.

The $50 million in upgrades include restarting the mill's C2 paper machine, which will now produce new water-resistant paper grades that are intended to replace single-use plastic products.
The loss of capacity has helped increase the price of all paper
|
Other upgrades include modifying the mill's boiler to use more waste bark fuel instead of natural gas, which is expected to reduce more than 26,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year, or the equivalent of taking about 5,600 cars off the road annually. Despite the rapid increases in paper prices since the pandemic the supply of paper keeps dropping. Machine closures and entire mill shut downs have been reducing the supply. Domtars closure of four North American Mills , Stora Enso huge Finland Mill shut down, Neenah Paper's Appleton Mill and the bankruptcy of Arjowiggins have all dramatically reduced the supply of fine or printing paper worldwide.
