Canfor Closing B.C. Pulp Mill
PRINCE GEORGE , B.C.—
B.C. forestry company Canfor Pulp will close the pulp line at its Prince George pulp and paper mill, permanently shedding 300 jobs. Forestry giant says lack of fibre reason for permanent closure. This will lead to a reduction of 280,000 tonnes of market kraft pulp annually, at the end of March. Canfor said the decision to close the pulp line at the mill came after an “extensive analysis” of its operations and the long-term supply of fibre in the area.
The Canfor said the specialty paper facility at the mill will stay open.Pulp is the major component for making paper . If the available supply of pulp drops then the manufacturing of paper goes down and the price of paper goes up. Despite the rapid increases in paper prices since the pandemic the supply of paper keeps dropping. Machine closures and entire mill shut downs have been reducing the supply. The closing of Island Paper Mill Vancouver in October, Domtars closure of four North American Mills , Stora Enso huge Finland Mill shut down, Neenah Paper's Appleton Mill and the bankruptcy of Arjowiggins have all dramatically reduced the supply of fine or printing paper worldwide.
Mill closing will reduce the supply of pulp which will push price of paper up.
