Go Canada! SAIT student ready for WorldSkills action
NORTH BATTLEFORD, SK—Saskatchewan's Marissa Halter is set to rep Team Canada at the 2013 WorldSkills trade and tech skills competition, where she will compete against students from around the world in print media technology.
"I am excited and honoured to be a member of Team Canada at WorldSkills Leipzig 2013 and I will give it everything to get myself on that podium and bring back a medal," Halter said in a release.
Halter, 20, studies graphic design and print technology at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT Polytechnic) under instructor Peter Masch, who coached her to a gold medal win at the 2012 Skills Canada Nationals. The two held practice every Friday during winter semester. "He would help me run the machines, and we would just do that over and over again until I was comfortable with that," said Halter to sait.com.
As well as training with Masch, Halter works at Rhino Print Solutions. According to her profile on Skills Alberta, her career aspirations include working as a press operator and pursuing graphic design. "I enjoy seeing a project from start to finish. You start with a blank page and you get to be creative and make it come to life when you print it," she said.
The biennial international event takes place July 2-7 in Leipzig, Germany. Thirty-five Team Canada members will ply their trade against more than 900 competitors from 54 countries and regions in both team and individual skills competitions, including autobody repair, plumbing and heating, and IT network systems.
