Postal union gives 72-hour strike notice
OTTAWA—Mail carriers could be off the job by the end of the week as their union has given strike notice to Canada Post.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has presented its final offer to Canada Post following seven months of negotiations, while issuing its 72-hour strike notice. The union will be in a legal strike position as of 11:59 p.m. EDT on June 2.
A May 30 statement from CUPW notes "the union's new proposal represents a comprehensive offer that reflects the priorities of the CUPW membership.
"We reminded management that we remain totally opposed to their proposal for the elimination of sick leave and the imposition of the short-term disability plan."
The complete text of the final offer is available on the union's website www.cupw.ca.
For its part, Canada Post says its own revised final offer tabled May 24 "addresses many of the concerns raised by the union and provides measures to help the company remain financially sustainable."
If there's a strike, only pension and social assistance payments would be delivered.
