Printing Industry Loses Mary Black
TORONTO—
The Canadian printing industry has lost one of it's greatest leaders. Mary Black died on July 5th at 80. Mary pioneered women in the industry. She was one of the first female sales representatives in the industry starting at Graphic Litho Plate in the 1960's. Open her own film house Colour Technologies in 1985. She is best known in the industry when she became Chair of Ryerson University's School of Graphic Communications Management in 1996. During her 10 years at Ryerson she was the force behind the building of the Heidelberg Centre
which gave the industry a focal point and it own building. She was went to high school career days and convinced a lot of young people to go into the printing industry. By the time she left Ryerson over half the graduating class were females. After she left Ryerson she ran her own recruiting company for the industry. She never took "NO" for an answer and her motto was " It's easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to get permission. She was awarded "Printer of the Year" in 2005 by Graphic Monthly.
