Rotating Strikes Hit Direct Mail Printers
TORONTO—
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers which represents 50,000 postal workers has announced that it plans to continue their strike action in Toronto . The Gateway facility in Mississauga and the South Central plant in the Toronto’s east end process roughly two-thirds of all mail in Canada. The strike action began on Tuesday . On Wednesday morning CUPW announced that Kelowna, BC would also be hit by rotating strikes .
The federal government named a special mediator on Wednesday in hopes of ending rotating walkouts at Canada Post that forced closure of the Toronto sorting plants for a second day. Mail and parcels will not be delivered or picked up in the impacted areas while the union continues their strike activity.The Union says it needs Canada Post to address issues that have stemmed from the explosive growth of parcel deliveries, The direct mail business has already started to feel the effects with customers putting off or cancelling campaigns.
